Your prospects, customers, and clients are bombarded by thousands of marketing messages a day.
So what can you do to be on the top of the pile to be sure your marketing message is being seen and read by your prospects, customers, and clients?
The best thing you can do is hit ’em right at home… in their mailbox!
Even still, you’re going to fight with other marketing messages (postcards, sales letters, newspapers, flyers, etc.).
This means you need to stand out from the rest.
How To Show Up In Your Customer’s Mailbox Like No One Else
So, how do you break free from the clutter in the mailbox?
By sending 3D mail and lumpy mail. Yep, if you want your marketing message to get opened and read, 3D mail and lumpy mail is just what you’re looking for.
Here are a few 3D Mail and Lumpy Mail examples that I use:

Mini Trash Can and Bank Bag (hand is there so you can see how big the pieces really are)

Bank Bag with handwritten note, offer for Magnetic Marketing, and two fake $100 bill cards (goes great with the bank bag)

Message in a Bottle

Rush Priority Express Envelope w/ my notepad I use to write handwritten notes I put in the Message in a Bottle.
If one of these showed up in your mailbox wouldn’t you want to know what’s inside?? Of course you would!
I’ve been using 3D mail and lumpy mail for a couple years now for my marketing business and for when I was in real estate looking for listings.
Let’s take a look at the 3-step campaign I used to target expired listings while in real estate:
Here’s the breakdown:
- The first step was a postcard letting the home seller know they’ll be receiving a home seller’s guide.
- Second step was the home seller’s guide, sales letters, testimonials, and a mini Rubik’s Cube (later changed it to a fake ‘Rush Priority Express’ envelope) to give it the lumpy look.
- Third step was the mini trash can telling the home seller’s not to throw away the opportunity to get their house sold.
Now it wasn’t cheap to do all three steps. It was a total of $8.35 to mail one complete 3-step campaign to one expired listing. Multiply that by 100 or 1,000 or more and you’re talking some serious cash.
But, the 3-step campaign did it’s job! Got the home sellers to raise their hands to talk with us. We were paying $129.43 per lead (based off how many campaigns we had to send out to get a lead… for every 15.5 campaigns mailed we got 1 lead). Sounds like a lot, right?
Well, real estate is a high-transaction business, so when you make $1,000s in commissions the Price Per Lead isn’t even in question. Also, think about what that lead brings in… more referrals (referrals are free leads!!!). Cha-ching!
Also, if you were to give me $100 and I gave you $200 back, would you do it? How many times would you do it? That’s right… same goes with marketing.
So 3D Mail and Lumpy Mail may not be good for a local pizza shop (though it could be done if you have a list of your top customers, and then decide to start a catering business, etc.), it’s best if you have a high transaction business and a targeted list.
The goal is to show up like no one else so you’re mailings are seen, read, and responded to, all leading you to new customers and clients!
