The news has been flying all over the world today that Donald Trump, against all odds, has won the U.S. Presidential Election.
Before I go any further I want to say this is not a political post. This is my observations of the marketing done with the Presidential Campaigns. It’s to give you marketing ideas that you can use to grow your business!
Whether you’re For or Against Donald Trump, you can’t argue that he is a MASTER MARKETER.
Hillary Clinton spend more than 10 times on her marketing campaign than what Trump spent, she even had celebrities and even the President himself campaigning for her and she still lost. But how??
Well, Trump is a Master Marketer. He had a “can-do” attitude and he never gave up, even with all of his failures, against all the odds.
He painted a picture of a brighter future (Right Message) to his target market (Right Market) going out and hustling on the streets (Right Media).
Remember the Marketing Triangle Dan Kennedy created:
*You have to get the RIGHT MESSAGE to the RIGHT MARKET using the RIGHT MEDIA
Just look at his slogan… “Make America Great Again.” It’s giving people a picture of hope.
Clinton’s slogan was… “Stronger Together.” Hmm… Ok. But what’s that mean?!
If you check out Clinton’s marketing you’ll see it’s all branding. It was really all about her and her brand.
Trump… again, he gave people what they wanted, not necessarily what they need. He gave in to their desires.
He was also real. He didn’t hold anything back and said it how he felt (whether it was right or wrong). People like people who are real. Trump gave them that.
He also broke all of the rules for any Presidential Candidate. Nobody has ever see anything like it and he shocked the world.
From a magazine interview in 1932, Thomas Edison said, “Hell, there are no rules here – we’re trying to accomplish something.”
So, what do you need to do to accomplish something?
Break the rules!! I’m not saying break the law, but break your industry norms. What do I mean?
Let’s use real estate for an example… If a buyer wants to see houses they just call up a real estate agent and ask to see some houses. That agent could show 100 houses and then the buyer could say they decided not to buy. Hmmph, now that agent is out of money.
But… how can you break the industry norm? You could charge a retainer (just like a lawyer) for your services! Want to see houses? Great! Just pay me X amount and I’ll show you houses. Then when you buy a house the amount of the retainer will go towards the commission. If you don’t buy a house… well then you’re out X amount of dollars for services you wanted.
Look, if Trump can win by being outrageous then so can you! Just make sure your marketing aligns with your personality and what you stand for.
Be real. Be outrageous. And break your industry norms!
